For this week’s subject I’ve chosen Castlerigg stone circle, a 3,000 year old stone circle, near Keswick in Cumbria. English Heritage describe it as “Perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of All The British stone circles, with panoramic views of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop” And it’s that dramatic setting that I have tried to capture in this scene; with the shapes and textures of the stones, contrasting with the distant views of mountains and pastures.
There are plenty of techniques to practice along the way, from wet into wet, wet on dry, dry-brushwork, careful use of masking fluid etc, employed in this scene, and lots to learn along the way. I have to say that this is my favourite type of subject; so I hope you enjoy painting it as much as I did.
Happy Painting, Geoff.
