You may have noticed by now that I particularly enjoy including structures like lighthouses, towers and windmills in my landscape paintings.

With this in mind, it’s probably no surprise to you to learn that I really enjoyed painting this little coastal scene in Cheboygan, Michigan, USA.

I was drawn to the deep blue sky, contrasting with the crisp white covering of snow on the land; but of course, the main focal point is the interesting octagonal shape of the lighthouse itself, with the shadows and bright red highlights describing its shape and form.

The composition is completed with some important details like the railings around the base of the building, the distant fir tree, the winter bushes on the left, and not least, the small stump in the foreground that provides us with some foreground interest and perspective.

I am at present in the process of framing the finished painting to hang in my studio.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
