In this composition, I love the way the Castle is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs, high above the sea, with just a glimpse of a distant island.

It’s an excellent subject for exploring the contrasts between the detail of the Castle structure and the loose, wet into wet forms of the trees and foliage, which in turn partly shroud the rugged, craggy rocks of the cliff face.

There’s plenty of fine brush work, but also a looser approach for the trees and soaring rocks.

A great project to get stuck into, but don’t be in a hurry, it’s a good one to take your time with.

Happy painting.
Geoff.
