In this scene, the second of the Christmas tutorials, I have chosen a slightly less traditional landscape composition, with no sky or distance.

Here we are looking down on a snow-covered river bank, with long blue shadows, just a glimpse of the base of the trees and a Fallow Deer taking a drink from the slow-moving river.

I’m not known for painting animals, but I think in this instance the added narrative provided by the Deer at the edge of the water transforms the scene, making it far more interesting.

A really satisfying painting to get to grips with.
