For this month’s watercolour landscape subject, I have chosen to work from this photo of Great Gable in the Lake District.

To my mind, this is one of those instances where nature presents us with a perfect subject, which meant I didn’t have to make any changes to the basic composition.

However I did feel that the colours in the photo were a bit grey and cool, so I have endeavoured to use slightly warmer colours, with a touch more red in the greys, and quite a bit of raw and burnt sienna to warm the greens slightly, and add a touch more brightness.

This is also a great subject for working with sweeping, broad brush strokes, that describe for the viewer the contours and shape of the landscape.

I suggest you work quite large with this one and go for the half-imperial size paper, but it will still work perfectly well at the smaller (quarter-imperial) size if you find the larger sheet of paper a bit intimidating.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
