I took the photo that inspired this painting on one of our favourite coastal walks, over the long stretch of sand, towards Shell Bay on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset.

I was initially drawn to the collection of weathered old beach huts, framed by the variety of trees and shrubs, and the areas of contrast between light and shade.

This bright light afforded me the opportunity to use strong shadows to describe the contours of the land, especially in the foreground.

It’s quite a busy scene, but I really enjoyed the variety of methods and techniques I was able to employ to complete the picture.
