For this watercolour landscape subject, I’ve chosen the ruins of Old Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, working from a photo I took on a cold, winter’s day a couple of years ago.

Rather than looking for architectural detail and accuracy, I was after a misty, atmospheric look, that I could paint with a fairly limited colour palette.

I started with a unifying wash over most of the scene, before working on the atmospheric ruins that make up the background, being careful to leave carefully placed hints of bright light along the tops of the walls and on the foreground grass verges.

Great fun with lots of techniques to practice along the way.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
