Over the past few months, I have had a few requests from members to do a painting that features traditional-style English buildings.
I don’t think you can get much more traditional than a thatched country cottage, so when I saw this one in the heart of rural Suffolk, I thought immediately that it would make a great subject.
Of course, this type of subject can always be described as a bit “Chocolate Box”, but I think it’s none the worse for that, and does have some fascinating lessons along the way.
Things like how to make the thatch look authentic without over-detailing it, how to establish just the right colour for the render and careful use of shadow to describe the shapes.
I had great fun painting this one, I hope you enjoy it just as much.
Happy Painting,
Geoff
