I’ve looked at this scene a few times over the last few years and considered doing a painting of it as a tutorial.
After my last visit there on a beautiful October morning, I resolved to include it at the next filming session.
I had quite a few photos to choose from, but eventually chose this angle as it really emphasises the fact that this rocky outcrop was once connected to the land.
The distinctively shaped structures give us an excellent opportunity to use the texture, or tooth of the paper, combined with the dry-brush technique, to capture that rugged, uneven look to the rock surface.
And it’s also a good opportunity to use perspective and a limited colour palette, to achieve that all important feeling of distance.
