I’ve had a few requests recently to paint another street scene, and it reminded me that I had been contemplating doing a tutorial from a photo of Tallinn in Estonia, which I took while on a holiday in the Baltic region a few years ago.

I was drawn to the dark figures, conveniently placed in the shadow of the archway, and the bright light on the right-hand wall contrasted with the darker, shaded wall on the left.

I also enjoyed taking advantage of the few areas of foliage (not just the overhanging branches, but the planters and hanging baskets), which soften the harder, more angular shapes of the buildings.

A really satisfying subject.
