We certainly get about a bit with these watercolour landscape tutorials.
In the past month, we’ve gone from a Derbyshire Woodland to a cliff-top view of the Cornish coast, and now we’re visiting a sunlit street in Venice.
In this little street scene, we are looking straight into the bright sunlight; also known as “Contre Jour”.
I like the way this narrows down the range of tones and colours, and gives us a vivid bright light emanating from the centre, framed by the dark, tall forms of the buildings on either side.
It’s important not to over-work a subject like this and go for capturing the strong light and atmosphere of the occasion.
It can feel a bit tricky at first, but it’s really exciting as it suddenly comes together in the latter part of the painting.
A really enjoyable subject.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
