For my latest Watercolour Landscape tutorial, I have chosen as a subject Anne Hathaway’s cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon.
It was originally built in 1463 and was occupied by Anne Hathaway from her birth there in 1556 to the time she married William Shakespeare in 1582.
Of course, it is now a big tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world, and while you could be forgiven for thinking that as a painting subject it’s a bit “chocolate box”, I think it makes an excellent scene with so much to learn along the way.
I always enjoy the challenge of painting a thatched roof with its overhanging eaves, which gives us a great opportunity to use strong shadows to create a feeling of depth.
The scene also gives us the chance to contrast the soft shapes of the gardens and background trees with a more detailed approach to the architectural details of the building itself.
A busy little scene, but great fun to paint and very rewarding.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
