As I am sure you have noticed by now, windmills are among my favourite structures to paint, so when I saw this scene featuring Herringfleet Mill on the Norfolk Broads I was immediately inspired to paint it.
I particularly like the hexagonal (or it might be Octagonal, we can’t quite see from this angle) timber structure, next to the circular shape of the encased water wheel.
Fortunately for us, the sails are silhouetted against the sky, which I think is easier than if they were lighter than the background, and the whole scene is enhanced by the position of the wooden footbridge which neatly leads the viewer's eye to the focal point.
There’s also an interesting, if busy, foreground, for which I have experimented with a “spattering” effect using masking fluid.
I hope you find this subject as enjoyable to paint as I did.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
