Over the years I have walked past this little row of thatched cottages many times when walking in and around the Chatsworth estate, near our home in Derbyshire.
In this part of the UK, it’s quite unusual to find thatched roofs, and to me, the challenge of doing a convincing job of the thatch is a big part of the subject’s appeal.
Another aspect of this scene that appeals to me is the group of plants and flowers in front of the cottages; here I decided to try out a “spattering” effect in an attempt to achieve a more spontaneous, random look.
There’s also some very satisfying detail to get stuck into, like the stone walls, windows, doors etc and some interesting shadow work to complete the picture.
Plenty to do but very enjoyable.
Happy Painting, Geoff.
