For this latest tutorial, I have chosen a great photo of Fairy Glen, a beautiful, steep-sided valley in the Snowdonia Forest Park in North Wales.

It has a lovely cool background framed by the tall rocks that dominate either side, with foliage and branches clinging to the rough, weathered surfaces, below which there’s a rush of foaming water heading straight towards us.

There are plenty of techniques involved; dry brushwork, careful use of body colour, lots of wet into wet, and even a bit of spattering with white gouache, which is always fun.

We can see at a glance that the subject isn’t without challenges, as it’s quite a busy little scene that requires some sorting out and a bit of simplification, but if you bring it to a good conclusion it’s a really rewarding subject to paint.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
