During a visit to Kent in the autumn of last year, I came across this scene and knew immediately that it would make a really good painting tutorial.
It’s in the grounds of the National Trust property, Sissinghurst Castle, which was the home of the author and garden expert Vita Sackville-West.
I decided that the scene was busy enough without the parasol and seated figures; so I left them out of the composition making the focal point the fascinating shapes of the Oast Houses.
I was also drawn to the warm tones of the brickwork, the interesting shapes of the roofs, and the foliage which has been allowed to encroach on the buildings, providing us with an attractive contrast of hard and soft shapes.
The composition is completed by the large tree on the right; its beautiful autumn colours contrast perfectly with the pure blue of the sky.
A really enjoyable subject.
