If you make a comparison between the reference photo and the finished painting in this latest subject, you can easily see that I used the photo just as an inspiration, rather than an image to follow too closely.

In fact, you might find that once you get into the painting process, you’re not referring to the photo very often; rather, you are working more with your imagination and creativity, the result of which will be very much something individual to you.

At the outset, you need to keep your paper nice and wet, to give the initial loose washes plenty of time to blend and merge on the paper.

Of course, there is some detailing required for the boat, and to some extent the trees, but you might find it’s better to focus on shapes and atmosphere rather than too much detail.
