Length: Full Tutorial: 164 minutes
Difficulty Level: Grade 3

At almost three hours' duration, this is one of the longest tutorials we have filmed to date, but I felt I needed the time to explain every aspect of the scene thoroughly, particularly the row of distant buildings and the jumble of different shapes and sizes of boats that make up the foreground.

It’s important with this subject to suggest just enough detail for the distant town to make it credible, but still have the appearance that it is in the distance.

Then we can save the more detailed work for the colourful and varied shapes and sizes of the foreground boats.

Finally, I contrasted the carefully painted boats with a loosely painted foreground, suggesting the grasses, weeds and shingle.

I think time will just disappear when you get stuck into this one.

Happy painting,
Geoff.
