For this latest watercolour landscape tutorial, I was inspired by a photo I took in March this year, of an old boatyard near Studland Bay in Dorset.
At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking it looks more like a cluttered dumping ground than a potential painting subject, but I love sorting out this sort of composition and looking for interesting shapes and colours among all the detritus.
The main three elements of the subject are the old boat, the tumbledown shed, and the weathered winter tree, reaching up into the sky, but there’s also plenty of interest amongst all the clutter that is strewn about the middle distance and foreground.
I think it is so much more rewarding to paint than if it had been a neat and tidy boatyard, and it affords us an opportunity to simplify and take just what we want from the scene, leaving out any elements that could make it appear too busy and over-worked.
I hope you enjoy painting this subject as much as I did.
Happy Painting.
Geoff.
