For this latest watercolour landscape tutorial, I am revisiting a subject that featured in a previous tutorial a few years ago: Fairfield Church on Romney March.

However, this time I am painting it from a different angle, and whereas the last time I tackled it was in the summer, I think it will make an excellent winter subject.

I’ve always thought that looking at a snow painting shouldn’t have to make you shiver, so I’ve used a bit of artistic license and put a warm glow in the sky.

The glimpse of the river running from the middle distance to the foreground gives us an opportunity to reflect this glow, and I used a thin red wash across the foreground to echo the sky colours and complete the scene.

Most of the detail is concentrated on the church itself, with quite large “big brush” washes across the sky and the land to provide the perfect contrast.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
