For the subject of this tutorial, I am revisiting a location on the Yorkshire Coast that, in my opinion, is full of brilliant painting material. Robin Hood’s Bay.

Working from a photo taken from the top of the hill above the village, we’ve got an elevated view of this scene (You can’t take cars into the village itself; instead, you have to park at the top and walk down).

This backdrop of the Yorkshire coast, with the distant pastures and cliffs coming down to the sea, makes the perfect setting for the almost haphazard row of cottages and rooftops in a variety of shapes and sizes, providing us with an excellent composition.

I am particularly drawn to the contrast of the warm colour of the pantile roofs with the cooler blues and greys of the sky and sea.

There’s a great opportunity to create a feeling of distance behind the houses, and exploit the contrast between their more defined shapes, and the softer wet into wet treatment of the middle distance and foreground.

Great Fun!

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
