A previous version of this scene features in one of my books, plus the Home Page of the website, which has resulted in quite a few requests from members to do it as a tutorial.

Primarily I think this subject shows how useful it can be to include figures in the landscape, especially if the scene, as with this one, features plenty of atmospheric open space.

There are many techniques along the way, including large areas of wet into wet washes, dry brushwork, and the fascinating technique of “scraping back” used to create the craggy appearance of the rocky cliffs.

A really exciting subject to get stuck into.
