Today’s watercolour landscape tutorial is inspired by a photo I took a few years ago, when visiting a picturesque little village called Taormina in Sicily.
At the top of the village is an ancient Roman Theatre with spectacular coastal views, but I have chosen a little scene I spotted up a narrow alleyway, just off the main street.
I find that I often stumble across the best subjects, slightly off the beaten track.
I think the scene appealed to me because I liked the soft shapes of the wispy green foliage on the left, and the fuller shapes of the Bougainvillaea on the right, contrasted with the harder, more clearly defined details of the steep steps and surrounding buildings.
These make for interesting detail and are finished in lovely warm coloured stucco, all set beneath the glimpse of a distant mountain.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
