This little woodland scene is based on a photo sent in by one of our members, John from Devon, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it had the potential to make a good painting.

I was immediately drawn to the way the shaft of strong sunlight illuminated the foreground, creating shadows cast by the rustic fence and gate. That's not the only area of interest, though; I also like the glimpse of rushing water and the rich autumn foliage at the top, which frames the whole scene.

A very satisfying composition with plenty to get to grips with.
