For my latest watercolour landscape tutorial, I have chosen to work from a photo I took on a recent hike in the Lake District.

The subject is a farmhouse owned by the National Trust called Hartsop Hall which is near Ullswater in the Lake District.

We recently used this scene in a social media post and got a good response with many requests to use it for a tutorial; so here it is!

It’s a fascinating old building that affords us lots of opportunity for weathered stonework, contrasting with the white render on the right-hand side of the building, and all set in front of the backdrop of the densely wooded Cumbrian hillside.

It’s a really good lesson in how to contrast harder, straighter shapes, with softer wet into wet passages, plus lots of interesting building details.

I hope you enjoy painting this scene as much as I did.

Happy Painting.
Geoff.
