For my latest tutorial, I have chosen a simpler, less involved subject; Blackness Castle, a fifteenth-century fortress, on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Scotland.

I love the way the focal point (the castle) is framed by the big sky, the calm sea and the craggy rocks of the foreground.

This simple composition places the imposing shape of the castle well into the distance, making it partially silhouetted against the dramatic sky; all of which means we don’t need to put in quite so much detail, which makes the scene more about atmosphere and a sense of place, and therefore a little less demanding.

Great fun to paint for both more experienced artists and those newer to watercolour.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
