For this latest tutorial, I am working from a photo sent in by one of our members; Joy from Canada.

Joy tells me that it is a scene she comes across on one of her favourite walks from Lake Louise, in the Banff National Park.

This is a less detailed scene than many on the site and is mainly about atmosphere and a feeling of distance, which has enabled me to call it a grade 1.

It is basically an “L” shaped composition, with the large tree going right up to the top of the scene on the left, and finished off with the rocky, uneven foreground rendered in a warmer colour to help bring it forward and frame the scene.

A really good study in tonal values and lots of practice at Conifer trees, which do crop up in quite a few of the tutorial subjects.

Happy Painting,
Geoff.
