We recently spent a lovely bright, warm day in Chania on the Greek island of Crete.

It’s a place full of painting possibilities, with a network of narrow streets full of bars and cafes, winding down to the equally attractive port.

The first thing that drew my attention on this particular street was the overhanging Bougainvillea, made up of two plants that met up in the middle creating this floral arch right across the street.

Without losing any of the character of the scene, I did a bit of simplification before starting with some loose, overall washes in bright warm colours, gradually adding detail as the painting progressed.

The whole scene was then framed with the spectacular, colourful flowers of the Bougainvillea.

I hope you have a few enjoyable hours painting, as indeed I did.

Enjoy.
Geoff.
