I first visited New York, I think in 2008, when I was gathering material for my book “New York in Watercolour”, and we both spent quite a lot of time in Central Park, where I first came across this bridge.

I immediately thought it had potential as a painting subject, and liked the way the bridge, river banks and reflections in the water, could almost be mistaken for a pastoral, rural scene. But then you get the glimpses of the cityscape through the branches of the winter trees, and it becomes quite unique.
