In this new tutorial I am working from a photo I took recently on one of our favourite walks in the Lake District; Patterdale to the tiny hamlet of Hartsop, near Ullswater.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, when I took the photo it was quite a cloudy grey day with flat light conditions; but in a way, this makes the project all the more interesting, as it gives us the opportunity to use our imagination, and brighten the scene with a bit more colour and contrast.

It’s also an excellent subject for learning how to soften the hard shapes of the slate and stucco farm buildings with the softer shapes provided by the plants and foliage, which I think are an equally important part of the scene.

A very enjoyable subject with an equal mixture of wet into wet and finer detail.

Happy Painting.
Geoff.
