This painting of the Daigoji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, really is a riot of Autumn Colour.
A unique subject that is rich in bold colours and interesting detail, it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the most beautiful fall scenes in Japan.
Firstly we mix plenty of strong vivid washes; just floating them into the wet background, allowing them to mix and blend on their own.
Once that has dried, we can pull it all together with several techniques, to create the variety of trees that make up the backdrop.
Then it’s time to remove the remaining masking fluid, and carefully paint the detail that forms the fascinating shape of the temple and bridge.
Something to really get to grips with, and at the same time very enjoyable and rewarding.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
