This grade 1 tutorial is all about capturing the atmosphere and feel of a misty, winter’s morning beside a body of water.
There’s not a lot a lot of detail to get caught up in, and we’re working with a limited palette of colours.
There are quite a lot of wet into wet techniques required to achieve the soft, misty shapes, which we can then contrast with the harder, more defined shapes of the distant rooftops, the figures running along the bank and the dark, silhouetted trees.
I always find this type of simpler subject exciting to paint as I see the loose washes gradually build up and take form and shape, making it the perfect subject for watercolour.
