Rustic Doorway - Preview

For this project I wanted to find something a bit different to the traditional landscape and I got the idea of doing some kind of weathered old doorway from a painting I had seen Terry Harrison do a couple of years ago.

I originally had in mind something made of old wood with flaking paint, but after trawling through dozens of images I found this old iron doorway. I was particularly attracted to the warm yellow of the surrounding stonework and the way the relief work is merely indicated by shadow.

Then there's the beautiful colours in the patina of the rusty door itself, and again the careful use of shadow to suggest the recess. A really fun subject to get stuck into.
