I took the source photo for this painting on a visit to London a few years ago. It was a cold, bright November morning, with me stood on a slight incline looking into the light.
I love the way the large tree in the middle distance is backlit by the brilliant winter sunshine, which also reflects on the river in the distance, producing a thin, silvery strip of light.
The figures also play a big part in this scene, with their silhouetted shapes against the strong light, and just a hint of this same bright light on the tops of heads and shoulders.
