For my latest tutorial, I have chosen a slightly simpler subject, based around two photos I took during a coastal walk on a recent holiday.
When I describe it as a “simpler subject” this means that it is not quite as involved or detailed as some of the other tutorials on the site, hence the grade 1 classification.
Rather this one is all about capturing the action of the crashing waves, while also creating a feeling of depth between the detail of the foreground, the large shapes of the middle-distance rocks, and the paler, slightly faded shapes of the distant landscape.
There are lots of useful techniques to practice along the way, including the spattering technique with white gouache to round it off at the end, which I always find good fun.
Happy Painting,
Geoff.
